Bringing your Bernedoodle home – A guide to a successful first week

Sleeping like a angel in my playpen

Hey friends! This is a question that always comes up on my Instagram. People from all over have asked me, “how did your first weeks go?” Well, I’m glad I can share with you that it was a mix of feelings, for my parents, not for me. I felt pretty good the whole time.

FIRST NIGHT:

We arrived from our road trip around 9 pm. I was exhausted, so were my parents. They were pretty smart, and the whole house was set up for my arrival. They had 2 crates, one in their bedroom and one in the living room. We went right to the bedroom, and dad tried to acclimate me to the crate. I really didn’t like it first. Dad wanted to trick me with some treats, and it worked! I slept a couple of hours and woke up with dad putting me on a leash and walking with me outside, telling me to go potty. It repeated a couple of times throughout the night.

FIRST MORNING:

Wo-hoo! I have a new FAMILY. That’s when it clicked! I was in a new house, with new people, new toys, new everything. Mom and dad were at home with me the whole time. Mom works from home, which is one of the main reasons they got me (quarantine puppy), and dad took a couple of days off work to help with my settlement. So in the morning, I had breakfast inside my playpen. I had a playpen attached to my crate in the living room. This way, mom could work and watch me at the same time. I didn’t go inside the living room crate in the beginning. It took me a couple of days to trust it.

I slept a LOT on my first days. I was a pretty lazy puppy. Every 30min, mom took me out to pee. It was not very easy to make me poop. Took me a while to get into a steady routine.

Overall my first couple of days were good. I did whine in my crate for two nights, but mom and dad were brave enough to just let me scream like a dying pig. They never took me out of the crate, and I think that’s why today they say “go home,” and I run to my crate! It’s the best place ever!! Don’t take me wrong, it took a lot of work. You’ll see once I share my thoughts about training.

A couple of things helped me adapt to my forever home: good treats, robe toy, playpen, crate, and my parents’ PATIENCE. A lot of patience!

My bear paws!
I almost forgot to say: Bully Stick was my favorite treat and HELPED to stay on my crate. Please don’t leave your puppy alone while chewing on it, though. My parents never left me alone, and I only chewed bully sticks for 5-10min at the time.
