Every time we go out, people ask what kind of dog I am. Mom and dad regularly respond: “Bernedoodle.” The reactions are diverse: “wow, I only saw pictures of them; “I didn’t know they get this big”- “ah, I see the Bernese on him,” but the most popular is “Berne… what?”. That’s why I decided to dedicate the first post to educate you about my nature. I’m an F1 Standard Bernedoodle. What does it really mean? Let’s break it down:
F1: This is the initial cross, used most to understand the type of coat. It means I am first generation cross, 50 percent Bernese Mountain Dog and 50 percent poodle. Even though I need to be brushed daily, I’m pretty easy to maintain since my coat is wavy and not too curly. Not mentioning the shed part, I barely shed. (Thanks, dad poodle, for that).
Other common bernedoodles are F1b, F2, medium, and minis.
F1b: are a backcross, puppies are 25 percent Bernese and 75 percent poodle.
F2: are a second-generation cross, which means an F1 Bernedoodle crossed with an F1 Bernedoodle.
Standard: Means how big I am. A Standard Bernedoodle stands at 23 to 29 inches and weighs 70 to 90 pounds. Males are generally larger than females. I’m still growing and not sure how big I’ll be. My biological parents were 110lbs and 65lbs. I believe I’ll be something in between. I’m almost 7 months old, and I weigh 67lbs.
Berne: it comes from Bernese Mountain Dog (in this case, my biological mom)
Doodle: A Doodle is a cross between a Poodle and another dog breed.
I know there’s a tone of different Bernies out there. On my IG account, I’ve met all kinds of Bernedoodles, and they are all adorable in their own way. My mom didn’t know what a Bernedoodle was until 2 weeks before they got me. I heard my parents saying that they were obsessed with Goldendoodles (no worries, I know I am much cooler). They wanted a mellow, big, male doodle. Well, they founded what they wanted. I’m glad to be their dream dog 🙂
